Now my grandmother sprinkling me with holy water starts to make sense. I couldn’t leave the house without my grnad mother chasing me with a handful of holy water. to sprinkle this precious liquid on me.
My grandmother collected Holy Water from different sacred places. Visiting Fatima, in Portugal and Lourdes in France.
Or water someone brought her from a holy well in Istanbul, or water she had blessed by someone she deemed holy.
This memory skipped a generation, as my mother scoffed at the irrationality of water blessing, but my grandmothers earnest intentions impacted me.
Today, I fell blessed, literally, to be honoured with this sacred ritual. It left an impression on me that made me wonder about the spiritual powers of water.
It is the small remenants of a deeper richer understanding of water that Ireland, and all of Europe would once of had.
